Pain could be one of the sensations that frequently appear in your experience. Whatever it is, in results of injury or a long-standing condition. Sometimes it is a short-term or prolonged feature.
As much as it could be a warning signal from your body to call your attention and inform you of unusual settings, e.g., stomach cramps when eating too quickly, it could also be an intense sensation often seen in neurological conditions.
Once we have altered the nervous system, regular sensory signals can be misread or misinterpreted as pain.
Part of physiotherapy is to explore actions that could alleviate this sensation, e.g., reducing muscle stiffness, improving alignment, or regulating sensory function (e.g., desensitisation techniques or compression garments).
If those steps don’t yield results, we need to take a holistic approach to those body signals.
Online pain management program
For patients living with long-term pain, I sometimes recommend Pathways. This online pain management program combines pain science education, physiotherapy-based movement, CBT-style tools, meditation, and practices for nervous system regulation. It is designed to complement clinical care and to help patients build confidence in self-management over time. You can learn more at www.pathways.health.
Please visit the Pathways website to learn more and explore your free access for 2 weeks to learn about the content and how those techniques could support your comfort and wellbeing.
