Are you having problems with lifting your foot?
Problems with balance or falling over?

The foot drop stimulator could be a solution for these difficulties.

This high-technology device provides electrical current to your weakened or paralysed muscles to evoke desirable action e.g. lifting a foot. This assistance will be synchronized with your pace and walking pattern.

Conditions that benefit from FES

It could be very helpful for people who want to improve their mobility if it has been affected as a result of the lesion of the upper motor neuron. It is the impairment located between the brain and the spinal cord e.g. :

  • Stroke
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Head injuries
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Cerebral palsy and many others.

However, it will not be suitable for injuries occurring in the lower motor neuron – the distance between the spinal cord and peripheral nerves e.g. :

  • polyneuropathy
  • poliomyelitis (polio)
  • motor neuron disease
  • Guille-Barre syndrome.

Devices available

At present, we offer the PACE XL® device and the ALFESS ™ Functional Electrical Stimulation System

Both of these are modern and wireless devices, however, they have a different ways of controlling when to switch on and off. We strongly advise you to discuss the available options before the assessment to make the most out of the booked session.

Assessment

We recommend that you wear comfortable, loose clothing and well-fitted, flat footwear when you attend your assessment.

We also recommend that you refrain from shaving your legs on the day or before the assessment to avoid increasing skin sensitivity.
